The Tour

This guided school visit explores taste perception, food choice and food culture through a structured, discussion-led experience in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

It’s been designed specifically for GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition — so everything students experience links back to what they’re learning in class.

There are no worksheets — just structured, thoughtful discussion that helps students apply their knowledge in a real setting.

Students also explore the Northern Quarter’s history as Manchester’s former Smithfield Markets and learn how migration, labour and local industry influenced the area’s food culture — including the rise of curry canteens, linked to the textile trade.

It’s GCSE theory brought into the real world.

GCSE Links (AQA 8585)

The visit supports:

  • Sensory evaluation
  • Taste receptors & the olfactory system
  • Factors affecting food choice
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Evaluation and justification skills

It strengthens the analytical thinking students need for NEA, without conducting any assessment.

Teacher and Student Testimonials

Rob, from the tour company, liaised with me, before the tour, to identify areas that would meet the GCSE curriculum and he was happy to adapt some activities to make it more in line with the knowledge pupils need at this level. I particularly enjoyed learning about “Supertasters” and it was good fun testing to see if any of our group could be classed as such.  Would definitely recommend the tour as Rob was very knowledgeable and a great tour guide. I will definitely be booking again with my next cohort.”

Michaela Ryan, Teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition, Wellington School

” I really enjoyed touring around Manchester and trying different foods. Thanks Rob.” Lily- Year 10 Wellington School

“Scranchester was fun and Rob took us to lots of exciting and tasty places. I had an amazing time.” – Penelope – Year 10 Wellington School

“Our recent Scranchester tour with Rob was a resounding success for our 22 Year 9 Food and Nutrition students!.  I wholeheartedly recommend this trip, particularly for students considering GCSE Food and Nutrition. Rob’s exceptional support, from seamless pre-trip communication and comprehensive risk assessments to his engaging and informative on-site guidance, was fantastic.  Rob integrated the tour with our KS3 curriculum, weaving in concepts of taste, sensory perception, and the interplay of smell and flavour. The delicious food served throughout the day was a highlight, and Rob’s thoughtful consideration of dietary needs ensured every student enjoyed the culinary journey.  Beyond the culinary focus, Rob presented an overview of Manchester’s history, engaging the attention of our students. The entire day was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both students and staff, and we are already planning to repeat this enriching trip in the future!”

Mrs J. Breton, Head of Food and Nutrition at Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College

‘Our GCSE students have been attending the Eat the City Tour for the previous two years and we always have wonderful feedback from students and parents alike. Not only is it a lot of fun for them spending the day in town and eating lots of delicious food, the tour also provides an insight into the variety of multicultural food our city offers, and inspires them with their own cooking. Rob is also excellent at offering alternative options for students with intolerances, allergies etc- providing reassurance for us teachers and parents. Definitely recommend!’

Charlotte Anderson, Head of Food, Design and Technology at Loreto Grammar School

‘I have attended the Eat the City Tour with students on a number of occasions and despite living in Manchester for 20+ years, I find out something new every time I attend! The tour is rich with information about our town and students love walking around and eating lots of delicious food.’
